What is happening in Uzbekistan looks like something far more consequential.

This week, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev appointed his eldest daughter, Saida Mirziyoyeva, as head of his administration. In formal terms, this role is second only to the presidency in importance. Mirziyoyeva previously served as an aide to her father, but her status will be cast in stone going forward.

The position of head of administration was eliminated in 2023 as part of a broader institutional reform. Mirziyoyev’s decree has restored the post and installed Mirziyoyeva in it.
